Marijuana can affect a driver’s attention in a negative way. It can impair the individual’s driving judgment. It is not safe to use even in a small amount of the drug while driving. The person cannot judge the distance and loses the ability to control the vehicle by applying braking in time. It is, therefore, not safe to drive high or to ride with someone who’s been smoking marijuana or any other drug.
The result will be unpredictable when marijuana is consumed with any other drug. When it is mixed with alcohol, the impairment of faculties significantly increases the risk of accidents.
Marijuana can distort the person’s mind, which in turn, affects the sense of time and the speed on the road. The person cannot judge the distances and cannot respond to the sounds and signals timely on the road.
The persons might be driving so slowly with more caution or they will be in a higher gear depending on the dosage of the drug/s. However, they are still prone to deadly accidents whether they go slowly or faster due to possible hallucinations.
Most teenagers believe and are in the misconception that marijuana makes them a safe driver as they can concentrate better and drive slower. However, the actual thing is that marijuana affects the memory, judgment and perception.
A roadside study of reckless drivers, who were not impaired by alcohol, showed that 45% of these drivers tested positive for marijuana. The judgment differs from person to person. However, it is dangerous to drive after smoking marijuana.
