Applying veneer: You can apply wood veneer to the exterior of the cabinet boxes. Start with the ends of the cabinets. You apply the larger pieces than needed so that they hang over the edges, first start sticking this at the top and come downside. Later, you can use boards to make smooth veneer and to remove any air bubbles. You can cut the veneer at the edges with a sharp razor knife. You use the same technique to stick the small pieces of veneer in front of the cabinet. Sticking veneer is a critical process, for this you should have patience.
For doors: After applying of the veneer then you can replace the doors and drawers to cabinet. Arrange new doors and new hings to cabinet. You can replace the old drawer front with a new one, they can be fit in to the same holes as old ones.
So, in this way you can reface your cabinet yourself with out spending more money for this. Approximately, it may be half of the cost of purchasing new cabinet.
