Cocaine is an illegal drug that causes a state of euphoria. It is a powerful drug that stimulates the brain, giving short bursts of energy. However, it is highly toxic and is associated with many side-effects. Based on the dosage and frequency of drug taken, the effects of cocaine varies. Continuous usage of cocaine cause side-effects on brain, respiratory system, and heart.
Side-effects of Cocaine on Heart:
Cocaine directly stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and a hormone called adrenaline in particular. As a result, it is associated with a direct effect on cardiovascular system. The drug abuse increases heart rate. The arteries get narrowed due to cocaine and this is termed as vasospasm. This reduces the amount of blood flowing to the heart. It leads to chest pain and sudden heart attacks.
Because of increased heart rate and blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms may arise leading to death. Acute use of cocaine results in decreased blood flow to heart causing angina and heart attack. Regardless of the route of administration, chronic cocaine abuse accelerates hardening and subsequent narrowing of coronary arteries.
Side-effects of cocaine on heart can be observed immediately after use or even within four days of abuse. Chest pain, trouble in breathing, dizziness, and nausea are some of the symptoms which indicate that the drug user is suffering from heart dysfunction due to cocaine. The risk of heart diseases increases with frequent cocaine usage. Benzodiazepines are given to the user for immediate treatment for reducing adverse effects on heart.
