Gum recession is the major indication of gum diseases. It is a condition where the tissue surrounding the teeth is lost or pulled away exposing the roots of the teeth. There are many causes of gum recession among which some are listed here.

  • Gum diseases including gingivitis and periodontitis are the major causes of gum recession. With improper daily oral hygiene, the oral bacterial toxins get deposited and cause gum diseases. Inflammation and irritation of gums are the main symptoms of gum diseases. With the destruction of gingival and connective tissues, the gums separate from the teeth towards the root.
  • Aggressive tooth brushing or wrong way of brushing also causes gum recession. Even use of hard toothbrush damages the gum tissues below the teeth leading to recession.
  • Poor oral hygiene including inadequate brushing and flossing results in plaque formation in the oral cavity. Dental plaque is one of the main factors promoting gum diseases and thereby gum recession.
  • It is also found that gum receding is seen with age, especially in women. Osteoporosis is one of the common issues found in older women after menopause. It evidences the loss of mass from alveolar bone that supports teeth and gums. As a result, gum recession is seen among such women.
  • Certain studies have found that even genetic nature of a person makes him or her more susceptible to receding gums.
  • Changes in hormone levels at the time of puberty, pregnancy and menopause causes gum recession in women.
  • People with clenching habit often grind their teeth with pressure causing damage to gums.
  • Use of tobacco results in plaque formation that is considered to promote gum recession.
  • Misaligned bite problems causes more force on the gums and bone which may rise the chances of receding gums.
  • Any oral injuries which pierce the gum tissue can also cause gum recession.
