Foods to be Avoided When Wearing Dental Braces

Wearing orthodontic braces is the solution for straightening your teeth to give them a right appearance. The dental braces are the brackets which are attached to the teeth with non-permanent cement. The wires and bands are connected to the brackets to help the teeth to move in place. It is necessary to maintain these wires and bands for effective straightening of the teeth. However, they may get loosened because of the pressure of hard foods. So, it is advised to avoid taking certain foods when wearing braces.

Hard and tough food items like baby back ribs, raw hard vegetables, beef jerky and hard rolls should be avoided when wearing braces. This is because they damage the braces by bending or slicing through wires and bands. With this, even your cheeks gets hurt and damaged. This slows down the process of teeth-straightening. You may not observe these things until you visit your dentist.

It is also not good to take sticky foods like candies and gum because they get stuck in the brackets and wires making it difficult to clean. It is even more problematic if the sticky food item has sugar content. Sugar stuck in the brackets may enhance the growth of bacteria which may lead to further problems.

Apart from these, cold drinks with ice cubes should also be avoided as they create cracks where the cement bonds on the braces. Getting away from these food items when wearing braces is better to prevent any further dental problems. Ensure that you only take soft foods. Do not forget to clean and floss properly to remove any food particles stuck between the teeth and the brackets.
