Barrels are nothing but cylindrical containers which are made up of either wood, plastic, or stainless steel. These containers have a convex shape which are bound with iron or wooden hoops. Traditional barrels were made of wood and had an bulging shape at the middle. This structure of barrel makes it easy to roll and that’s how people put very little effort in carrying them. For several years, these barrels have been used for shipping goods and for storage purposes.
Coming to the history of barrels, they were seen long back in 23rd century, from the area named Burgundy. Palm wood casks are used for their construction during those days. Around 350 B.C air tight, convex shaped wooden containers which were able to withstand stress and were comfortable to carry by rolling, were in use. During that time, these barrels are not only used for carrying wine, water, vinegar and oil but are also used to store and carry precious gems, stones, gold coins different food items, pickled foods etc.,
The Romans started using these barrels in the 3rd century AD. And the people who made these barrels were called as Coopers. Researches of the archeological department had found some tools of cooper’s dated 100 B.C. During 18th century, one third of all the goods were transported in barrels. For nearly 2000 years barrels served as a best means for transporting goods. They were used for carrying any kind of materials starting from nails, gun powder, to precious metals and diamonds. Even though crates and bags are cheaper than barrels, people preferred barrels to them, since they found that carrying barrels is even more convenient. These barrels slowly lost their importance during 20th century, with the invention of logistics and large containers for carrying goods. But still they din’t lost their importance in the manufacturing of some beverages.
