Role Of Pharmacist In Prevention Of Prescription Drug Addiction

By | February 2, 2010

Pharmacist can prevent prescription drug addiction by providing simple information on how to take a medication correctly and discussing the possible side effects. Pharmacists can play major role in preventing and reducing prescription drug abuse by using the following strategies:

  • They should discuss with patients about the dosage of their medications, serious side effects and drug interactions, and the dangerous risks of prescription drug abuse. They should also caution patients not to share their prescription medications with others, to keep all medications in a safe location in the home, and the method to properly dispose of old and unused medications.
  • They should provide patients with written information regarding dangers of prescription drug abuse and how to protect medications in their home.
  • They should be alert regarding modified or forged prescriptions and create a drop-off program for expired and unused prescription medications.
  • If possible they should participate in a local hotline to alert other pharmacies when a fake   prescription is discovered.

Pharmacists can prevent prescription fraud or variation by observing false or altered prescription forms.
