By | July 14, 2009

The usage of drugs in teens has increased to a greater extent. So conducting of drug testing in schools is obviously required to keep them away from adverse affects of drug addiction and drug abuse.

The drug testing, however, is a little costly and complex affair. There may also be many issues arising among parents and children on these drug testing campaigns. So having good knowledge of these drug testing methods helps you to create awareness among them to deal with such issues effectively. The main issues will be with the cost and accuracy of these drug testing methods. The testing methods used to screen for various drugs is a primary factor in determining cost and accuracy.

Two general methods of testing are immunoassay or radioimmunoassay (RIA) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).

RIA is used for initial screening of drugs like marijuana, amphetamines, cocaine, opiates, and phencyclidine. The cost for each immunoassay screening package ordered to test for all the drugs listed above typically costs $20 to $50.

GC-MS is used for testing for steroids and for confirming any positive results. GC-MS is said to be the acceptable industry standard testing procedure. Since GC-MS is required to test for steroids, it makes it a more expensive testing procedure with $80 and $120 per test.
