When jewelry manufacturers are evaluated by size and total number of employees, the number of smaller manufacturers and the number of very large manufacturers have dropped only sensibly. But, for manufacturers consisting of 5 to 100 employees, the ranks have declined extremely.
In 1986, there were only around 1,000 jewelry manufacturers with 1-to- 4 employees, which is of same level as of today. But, the number of manufacturers in this smallest group increased by nearly 25 percent, reaching a peak of just under 1,300 in 1998, before starting to lessen to today’s levels.
At the leading end, the number of manufacturers appears to have increase and decrease like the ocean tide. Employment peaks were reached around 1990 and again around 2000. However, after each of these maximum points, the number of very large manufacturers reduced.
The group with the largest downfall includes manufacturers having 50-to-99 employees. The number of manufacturers in this group has declined by 62 percent since 1986. Clearly, this section has been solid hit by group. In contrast, very small producers can be active and move in accordance with the market. Whereas, very large producers consists of economies of series and can change markets themselves. Manufacturers between these two categories are caught and they had the maximum losses over the past two decades.
