History of the Olympic Games

The old Olympic games were part of a religious festival, they were dedicated to the Olympian gods, and goddess. Games and festivals were held at rural sanctuary in Olympia, where same religious believes were shared by Greeks with Olympia and spoke the same language. Sports men would come from each corner of the Greek world to participate in Olympic games. Such players were all men.

In the year of 776 BC, the ancient Olympic games started. Games were conducted for every four years for almost 12 centuries from then. Afterward, slowly other events were added. There are few athletic events such as first one is three foot races such as stadion, diaulos, dolichos and second one is pentathlon, there are five contents like discus, javelin, long jump, wrestling, and foot race. Third one is boxing, and next wrestling, pankration and hoplitodromos. Afterward, few additional events were added.

There was no Marathon in ancient Olympic games, but it is the modern event. Marathon was added in 1896 in Athens of the modern Olympic games. There were 42,195 kilometers as the distance of the modern marathon when the Olympic games were conducted in London.

The modern Olympic sports were conducted in Athens for the first time, in Greece, in 1896. Afterward, winter Olympic games were conducted in 1924 in France for the first time. The symbol of five rings in five colors on modern Olympic flag was introduced in 1908. In 1932, the idea of the Olympic torch or Olympic flame was introduced in Los Angeles. In 1920, Oath of Olympic was started.

This is the history about the Olympic sports. Few changes were added to the Olympic games and that is how it became modern Olympic games. Olympic games were last held in China in 2008.
